Job summary
Are you a former Mental Health nurse missing the challenges & rewards of nursing? Would you like to return to practice & re-join the NMC professional register?
If yes, we are currently recruiting former registered mental health nurses who are looking to return to practice & regain professional registration, we have an opportunity to return to practice within one of Livewell Southwest's Mental Health teams.
You will be supported to complete a Return to Practice (R2P) programme at Plymouth University. The course will be funded & you will be employed by Livewell Southwest as a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant £20,330 per annum, pro-rata for the duration of your training. We recommended that due to the nature of the programme, employed hours are a minimum of 30 hours per week
On the successful completion of the course & receipt of NMC PIN number, you will work as a band 5 registered nurse within your allocated team
You will have study leave to attend university as required & you will be supported in practice to achieve your practice learning outcomes. During the course, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 450 clinical hours within your allocated team & commit to attending 8 study days. Main duties of the job
We have Return to Practice placements available in Plymouth CAMHS Acute Pathway, Syrena House (Male inpatient recovery), Primary MH Teams, North & West Community Mental Health Teams. Candidates will provide mental health care/other interventions in the setting most appropriate to meet the patients needs/will provide high-quality assessments (inc risk assessment) to those who are experiencing a mental health crisis & then signpost to the relevant service. This could be an inpatient admission/CMHT within secondary mental health services/or it may involve signposting to third sector organisations or back to GP
Responsible for assessing/planning/evaluating/implementing care which may be complex/sensitive/unpredictable with the support of a Registered Practitioner
To undertake/develop all nursing skills/competencies, updating as required for their role to enhance the skill mix of the nursing team ensuring that the ever-changing health needs of patients are met
You will be designated to take charge under supervision (if appropriate to work area)
You are required to be able to teach unqualified staff/pre/post registration students
You will always work within the guidelines of the NMC code for trained nurses & organisational policies

Key Tasks and Responsibilities of the Post:
• Duties – all duties are under the direct supervision of a registered nurse/practitioner
• Provide holistic evidence based / best practice care to patients in accordance
• with National and Organisational approved policies/procedures and individual care plans.
• Utilise nursing skills to assess, plan and implement and deliver care to patients and review care to patients appropriately.
• Ensure planned nursing care is implemented and evaluated; take appropriate action in the light of evaluation.
• Undertake comprehensive risk assessments of all situations associated with the care of patients in order to ensure nurses and carers safety. This may include assessment and provision of equipment ensuring it is used safely.
• Monitor and maintain the health, safety and security of self and others.
• Play an active role in multi-disciplinary reviews, reporting on the nursing assessment of the patients’ progress and participating further in Multi-disciplinary Care Planning.
• Be involved in referrals, discharge planning, and case conferences to support or manage appropriate care provision for patients.
• Maintain accurate records, which are confidential, up to date, legible and that all care given must be documented. These records may be paper or IT based system and must be maintained as specified in the Organisation Policies, NMC guidelines and Government directives.
• To function as a member of a multidisciplinary team taking appropriate responsibility for the implementation of decisions made by the team.
• Provide education and continuing support to patients, family and carers.
• Undertake health promotion as requested to all age groups and contribute to planned health promotion activities.
• Be aware of organisational, professional and national developments within primary care and work within these guidelines e.g., NSF/ NICE/ NMC.
• Be aware of and abide by organisation’s approved Policies, Patient Group Directives, Standards and Quality Assurance Initiatives.
• The returnee is required to comply with all infection control policies and guidance, attend relevant updates and report issues of concern to their immediate line manager (if no action or explanation received, then it is the individual’s responsibility to escalate to Director of Operations/ Chief executive office).
• Be conversant with the vulnerable adult and child protection procedures and policies of Livewell Southwest.
• Always maintain confidentiality in respect to the patient.
• Be responsible for organising own time management daily in line with caseload demands balancing patient needs with the administrative aspect of the role.
• Initiate and participate in Clinical Supervision.
• To liaise effectively with other areas and services. To develop and maintain relationships with providers statutory and non-statutory.
• Share knowledge and information to promote a cohesive team.
• Act as a professional role model demonstrating clinical skills and high standards of practice and professional conduct.
• Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives, e.g., clinical audit or clinical policy development.
• The returnee will be required to use a computer, being responsible for timely recording patient activities for IT data collection, dealing with e-mail queries, stock and equipment ordering.
