General Practitioner (Specialist Grade) in Forensic Psychiatry
Job summary
We are seeking for a Substantive General Practitioner (Specialist Grade) with a Specialist Interest in Forensic Psychiatry based at Langdon Hospital, Dawlish. Langdon Hospital cares for adult male gentlemen with a serious mental illness. A stay can include admission and assessment of acutely unwell gentlemen, the varied road of their recovery and planning good quality continuity of care at discharge. An admission can last for months to years which gives a rare opportunity to build a high level of trust and give the time needed to identify and address physical health issues.
The role allows for attention to detail and patient specific care planning over a wide age range, currently 18-83 years of age. This age range generates a variety of physical health conditions.
The site also employs a wide range of staff with different skills working in various specialities, allowing the onsite GP to work in partnership within a wider MDT.
Langdon is a purpose built hospital set in a gentle countryside setting. This allows for appropriate clinical care to be offered balanced within a site in which close proximity to nature can be appreciated by all.
Main duties of the job
The role is suited to a person who is keen to explore and address the disparity of poorer physical health in those with Serious Mental Illness (SMI)
The reasons for the disparity is multifactorial and each service user will have a specific set of physical health issues. Care plans devised require a pragmatic approach to what is relevant, realistic and patient centred. The SMI experienced by a service user can cause numerous challenges in terms of assessment and management options. Although the site is relatively small in terms of numbers, the complexity of cases is what can define the work load.
As per general practice the health issues can be of a preventative, acute and chronic nature. The type of work allows for a service specific shared cared to be developed. An example is the obstructive sleep apnoea pathway. Here we do the overnight oximetry recording on site using our own equipment which our local hospital reviews and reports on. This allows for a more streamlined referral processed focused on those for whom a CPAP machine is specifically recommended.
